Forestry students at the University of Sopron have received outstanding international professional recognition: the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA), one of the world's largest organizations for forestry students, has chosen them to host this year’s international meeting for the Southern European region. Beyond professional success, this opportunity is a significant honor for the Sopron student community, as the organization only grants a few locations per year the chance to host an international event of this magnitude.

IFSA operates in more than 66 countries, bringing together 146 local member associations and connecting thousands of students worldwide in the fields of forestry, nature conservation, and environmental management. The politically and religiously independent non-profit organization aims to strengthen international professional cooperation, support knowledge sharing, and provide opportunities for young professionals to actively participate in global environmental thinking.
Students of the University of Sopron have long been active participants in the international forestry student community, but winning the right to host this event marks a new milestone. During the application process, the Sopron organizers convinced IFSA decision-makers with their professional program plan, international connections, and the unique natural values of the Hungarian locations.
Between May 24 and 31, approximately thirty students will arrive in Hungary from various parts of Europe and the world – including Italy, Germany, France, South Africa, Nepal, the United States, and Transylvania – to jointly examine the correlations between climate change and water management.

At the center of the eight-day professional program series are Hungary’s most sensitive ecological regions. Participants will visit the Lake Fertő region, the Balaton Uplands, the Drava River area, and the Homokhátság (Sand Ridge) region. The goal is for students to learn about the environmental problems affecting different habitats and the professional responses to them through direct field experience.
One of the most important elements of the program will be the study of the Homokhátság, where participants will encounter the problems of desertification, falling groundwater levels, and water scarcity. This will provide a sharp contrast to the sites showcasing water-linked habitats, such as the ecosystems of Lake Fertő or the Drava region.
“Our goal was for participants to see the effects of climate change through as many types of landscapes and habitats as possible,” said Álmos Pál Ágoston, a forestry engineering student at the University of Sopron and one of the main organizers of the event. He added that the organizers' personal professional networks and local knowledge played an important role in selecting the locations.
In addition to the professional programs of the event, the international exchange of experience is just as important. Participants will present the forest management, nature conservation, and water management practices of their own countries to one another, while jointly searching for sustainable solutions to the increasingly urgent challenges of climate change.
For the Sopron students, organizing the meeting represents both a professional challenge and an international debut opportunity. The event clearly demonstrates that the forestry training at the University of Sopron remains an active and recognized player in the international professional community.

IFSA’s long-term goals include community building, supporting extracurricular learning, and strengthening students' international involvement. The Sopron event could be an important milestone for these goals, while also showcasing Hungary’s natural values and professional expertise to young specialists arriving from all corners of the globe.
