The University of Sopron and its partners – SMAFC, TAEG Zrt., Sopron Wanderers Hiking Association, Fertő-Hanság National Park and Sopron Transylvanian Circle – cordially invite everyone interested to the "Jó szerencsét!" (Good luck!) University Hiking Day, which will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2025. This special event is not just about the love of nature and exercise, but also offers a unique opportunity for participants to jointly commemorate the rich mining past of Sopron, the events of World War II, and pay tribute to the Transylvanian students who died as martyrs and the memory of the Golden Train story. The center of the hiking day is Brennbergbánya, a small mining settlement near Sopron, one of the jewels of our country.

Tours and programs

During the hiking day, participants can choose from three different routes, each combining natural beauty and historical commemoration:

Mining tour (10 km): The visible and invisible memories of mining in the embrace of nature.

Golden Train tour (8 km): On the former route of the Golden Train, with the secrets of history and nature.

Adventure tour for families (2-3 km): A shorter route with playful tasks, which can be completed at your own pace in Brennbergbánya, around Borbála Square.

Participants in the 10 and 8 km tours will jointly participate in the re-inauguration of the memorial column erected in honor of the Transylvanian students at 12:00 in Brennbergbánya. During the event, interested participants will commemorate the tragic events of 80 years ago. Residents of the Transylvanian student dormitory of the University of Sopron fled to Brennbergbánya in the spring of 1945 to escape the bombings, and on March 30, five of them were held at gunpoint by retreating German soldiers. Four of them lost their lives on the spot, and they are remembered by the erection of the memorial column.

Lunch and community experience

Those who undertake the hike will meet on Saturday, March 29th at 9 o'clock at the "pub church" of Brennberg. The final destination will be Borbála Square, where participants can take part in a joint lunch from 1:00 PM. The instructors and students of the University of Sopron will prepare the delicious lunch together for the participants of the tour: Dr. Ferenc Jánoska and Dr. Tamás Rétfalvi will be the two chefs, and the members of the Selmec Society will work under the hands of the professors. The menu: deer stew with sourdough bread.

The hiking day is open to everyone – students, instructors, employees, family members and friends can also join. Participation in the commemoration is also possible separately.

Registration and tour selection is possible until March 26th.
