University of Sopron Student Conducts Research in Brazil’s "Ecological Capital"

Curitiba, the capital of Paraná state, is world-renowned as a gold standard for sustainable urban planning. Sitting at an altitude of nearly 1,000 meters, the metropolis is often dubbed Brazil’s "Ecological Capital," boasting an impressive average of over 50 square meters of green space per resident. For a student from the University of Sopron - an institution deeply committed to sustainability - it was the natural choice for a professional mobility program.

In addition to his forestry studies, Zalán specializes in myrmecology (the study of ants). In Curitiba, he joined the prestigious Feitosa Ant Lab at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). As an active member of the research group, he has been immersed in both laboratory and field analysis.

"Curitiba is beautiful, filled with parks, and is one of the safest cities in Brazil," Zalán shared. "I am currently processing samples taken from seven different state parks in São Paulo, and the work has already yielded some very exciting results."

Beyond the lab, Zalán has made it a priority to soak in the local culture and natural landmarks:

"During my stay, I’ve visited the city’s most famous spots, including Tanguá Park and the iconic Rua 24 Horas. I even took the tourist bus to get a comprehensive overview of Curitiba in a short amount of time," he added.

This three-month mobility program represents more than just a scientific milestone for Zalán. The knowledge and international perspectives he brings home will undoubtedly enrich the professional community here in Hungary upon his return.
