Record-Breaking Sustainability Ranking: University of Sopron Secures a Spot in the World's TOP 80

Among the 15 participating Hungarian universities, Sopron proudly retained its 3rd-place position. In the broader European landscape, it secured 27th place out of 395 institutions—a 7-place rise compared to 2025. Looking at the long-term trajectory, the University of Sopron was ranked 590th back in 2020, representing an extraordinary jump of 512 positions over just six years.

The 2026 evaluation framework underwent significant updates, measuring performance across seven key areas (up from six) using 118 questions and 60 indicators. A brand-new category, Governance and Digitalization, evaluated elements such as sustainability budgets and reporting, digital implementation, AI and IoT policies, ethics and anti-corruption systems, and digital literacy.

The University of Sopron turned in a formidable performance across every indicator:

• Education & Research: 1st in Hungary (tied with the University of Pécs) with 1,250 points (96.2% score).
• Setting & Infrastructure: 2nd in Hungary.
• Energy & Climate Change, Water Management, Transportation, and Governance & Digitalization: 3rd in Hungary (scoring 94.1% in Transportation and 93.2% in Governance & Digitalization).
• Waste Management: 5th in Hungary.

Due to the updated methodology, category scores from this cycle should be compared cautiously with previous years.

Prof. Dr. Attila Fábián, Rector of the University of Sopron, emphasized that reaching 78th worldwide is the product of sustained effort across the entire academic community:

"At the University of Sopron, sustainability isn't a standalone commitment—it is the shared foundation of our teaching, research, campus operations, and community responsibility," Rector Fábián noted. "Our ESG framework and the Sound of Earth initiative turn this mission into measurable action."

He added that this victory belongs to all four faculties, research institutes, operational units, educators, researchers, staff, and students. He also highlighted the duty that comes with the accomplishment: as Hungary’s first carbon-positive university, Sopron must continue to lead by example on the international stage.

For context, the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings top three features Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands) in 1st place, Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld (Germany) in 2nd, and Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil) in 3rd.
