The University of Sopron has launched a unique, semester-long program series entitled “Czech Autumn” (CSŐSZ), offering a rich variety of cultural and educational experiences. The initiative not only engages Hungarian audiences but also features active Czech participation, including joint educational and cultural projects. The program marks a new chapter in Hungarian–Czech scientific, artistic, and social cooperation, supported by the Mendel University in Brno, the Embassy of the Czech Republic, and the Czech Centre.
“Our histories and traditions are closely intertwined. The profiles of our universities show many similarities in forestry, wood industry, design, and pedagogy. It is therefore especially important to strengthen professional and friendly relations with institutions from neighboring countries with similar academic focuses. We believe this event marks the beginning of a long and fruitful cooperation that will lead to joint projects, educational programs, and shared experiences,” said Prof. Dr. Attila Fábián, Rector of the University of Sopron, at the opening ceremony of Czech Autumn.
He also announced that the University of Sopron and Mendel University in Brno plan to establish a joint university brewery in Sopron, symbolizing the partnership between the two institutions.
"Mendel University in Brno and the University of Sopron are in fact not far apart—neither geographically nor intellectually. The two institutions share many connections, particularly the common history and mission of their forestry and agricultural faculties. Our university’s namesake, Gregor Mendel, the father of genetics, was a true polymath. His spirit continues to inspire us to build bridges between the sciences. We aim to carry this same spirit into our collaboration. We are happy to share our experiences, knowledge, and research results with the University of Sopron, and in the future, we plan to launch joint exchange programs, research projects, and academic initiatives. I believe that this cooperation is not only possible, but also necessary,” emphasized Prof. Ing. Jiří Skládanka, Ph.D., Vice-Rector for International Affairs at Mendel University in Brno.
The opening ceremony took place in the Botanical Garden of the University of Sopron, featuring the inauguration of a nature photography exhibition titled “The Sheltering Forest”, presenting works by photographers from the Czech Paradise Geopark and students of the University of Sopron. The event was enriched by a performance from the Mendel University Hunting Horn Ensemble.
“I came to Sopron from Budapest to open this exhibition on behalf of the Ambassador. The display showcases the diversity of Czech culture, nature, and traditions through the lens of the Czech Paradise Geopark. I am delighted that this autumn places the Czech Republic in the spotlight. I believe that events like this bring our peoples closer together and strengthen the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation,” highlighted Petr Hoštálek, First Secretary of the Embassy of the Czech Republic.
Following the opening, the Polka Party held at the Ligneum Visitor and Event Centre turned into a vibrant joint musical evening featuring students and artists from both universities. Performances by Brass Brothers, the Brotherhood Dance Ensemble, the Ürmös Folk Dance Group, and Czech and Sopron hunting horn players created a true Central European festival atmosphere.
The Czech Autumn program continues throughout the semester with joint courses, workshops, and guest lectures, along with events such as “Dumpling Week” at the Nyugat Restaurant, the “Legends of Škoda” car design exhibition, a Hild architectural walking tour in downtown Sopron, Czech film screenings, board game nights, children’s literature programs, and the “In the Footsteps of Moss and Fern” nature hike.
As Hungary’s Green University, the University of Sopron not only reinforces its commitment to sustainability, but also demonstrates that cultural diversity and international dialogue are essential elements of the future of higher education.
