The University of Sopron recently hosted a distinguished delegation from Paraguay, marking a new era of international cooperation between Hungary and South America. The visit culminated in the formalization of a strategic partnership aimed at fostering academic excellence and scientific innovation.
High-Level Diplomatic and Academic Exchange
The university was honored by the presence of a high-ranking delegation that included:
- H.E. Juan Francisco Facetti, Ambassador of Paraguay
- Dr. Zully Vera, Rector of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción (UNA)
- Professor Cynthia Saucedo, Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences (UNA)
- Ms. Laura Elizabeth González Céspedes, professor and researcher
- Mr. Angel Manuel Benítez Rodríguez, professor and researcher

Key Pillars of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
The central achievement of the visit was the signing of a Framework Agreement for Academic and Scientific Cooperation. This five-year agreement establishes a robust foundation for mutual development:
- Mobility Programs: The agreement facilitates exchange programs for students (including PhD candidates), academic faculty, and administrative staff.
- Scientific Research: Both institutions committed to joint research projects and the shared publication of results.
- Knowledge Exchange: A focus on the transfer of academic materials, publications, and scientific information.
- International Scholarships: Discussions centered on maximizing opportunities through the Stipendium Hungaricum program and other mobility grants to support Paraguayan students in Sopron.

The meeting provided a forum to discuss current research priorities and the implementation of specific collaboration opportunities to manage joint activities effectively. By aligning the expertise of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción—Paraguay’s oldest and largest university—with the specialized research traditions of the University of Sopron, both institutions aim to address global challenges, such as climate change, reforestation, agroforestry, sustainability through collaborative science.
