The University of Sopron places great importance on supporting its international students and helping them navigate cultural differences as they adapt to a new environment. As part of this commitment, the StudentHelp team of the International Office organized a workshop on intercultural understanding.
After participants were welcomed by Erzsébet Szaniszló, the session was led by guest lecturer Dr. Ildikó Furka, an intercultural expert with many years of international experience and a faculty member at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). After introducing the key theoretical concepts, she guided students through interactive pair and group activities. These exercises helped participants reflect on how cultural differences can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or conflict, and how such situations can be addressed constructively.
A core message of the workshop highlighted the importance of preserving one’s cultural identity and values, while also learning how to adapt respectfully to a new environment. Students were encouraged to stay true to themselves, yet remain flexible and open when adjusting their behaviour to support effective communication and mutual understanding.
The workshop concluded with an introduction to assertive communication, illustrated through practical examples that participants could try immediately.
Translated feedback from participants:
“It was an excellent initiative, thank you”
“We would love to have more events like this on similar topics.”
“I want this type of activities. It was really lucrative for us.”
The event offered valuable guidance to international students on how to remain authentic while building bridges across cultures with empathy and respect.
