The University of Sopron joins the UN Climate Change Universities Partnership Programme

The University of Sopron is proud to announce its acceptance into the UN Climate Change Universities Partnership Programme, a growing global network of academic institutions committed to advancing knowledge and collaboration on climate adaptation.

This prestigious partnership, confirmed by the UN Climate Change Adaptation Division (Nairobi Work Programme), formally recognizes the University of Sopron's dedication to sustainable development and addressing the critical challenges posed by climate change.

A Perfect Match: Operational Commitment and Deep Expertise

This collaboration represents a seamless and timely match. The University of Sopron is uniquely positioned to contribute not only its academic expertise but also its proven operational commitment to sustainability, exemplified by being the 1st Hungarian carbon positive university. Our institution’s strong performance in global rankings, including placing in the global TOP 200 for SDG 15, "Life on land" , and our latest achievement of ranking 99th globally in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, demonstrates our readiness to deliver high-quality, relevant research to the UN Climate Change process.

The University’s specialized knowledge is a direct answer to the Programme’s mandate to close knowledge gaps. Our decades-long focus on forestry, the wood industry, and forest ecosystems, combined with innovative approaches like biomonitoring and advanced Geoinformatics, aligns precisely with the Nairobi Work Programme's priorities. This partnership will channel our established Master’s and PhD research capacity directly into demand-driven, real-world solutions for climate-resilient development.

Through this collaboration, the University of Sopron will directly contribute to the work of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Nairobi Work Programme. Our students and faculties will have the unique opportunity to engage in UN-curated research and investigation, providing valuable contributions to climate-resilient development globally.
