The University of Sopron has achieved outstanding results in the 2025 international subject rankings of the Round University Ranking (RUR), positioning itself among the national leaders in multiple fields and among the world’s prominent higher education institutions.

The Round University Ranking (RUR) is an international university ranking system that evaluates the performance of 1,100 leading universities across 82 countries using 20 unique indicators across four key areas of university activity: education, research, international diversity, and financial sustainability. RUR has now published the 2025 subject rankings, covering 37 disciplines in the natural sciences, life sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, and several specialized areas.

The University of Sopron achieved first place among Hungarian universities in the life sciences field when considering performance within the subject rankings. (World rank: 452, Domestic rank: 1)

It also secured second place nationally in the engineering category. (World rank: 596, Domestic rank: 2)

Hungary’s “Green University” also holds a prominent position in the RUR subject rankings in the humanities (Domestic rank: 6) and social sciences (Domestic rank: 9).

The RUR rankings are designed as an evaluation system providing sufficient information on university performance, allowing various stakeholders—students, the academic community, university leadership, and policymakers—to use the data according to their specific needs.

The results of the 2025 RUR subject rankings clearly demonstrate that the University of Sopron’s strategic development, research performance, and international presence are tangibly strengthening.

How the ranking results are determined

The Round University Ranking uses three different data sources:

  1. Institutional data – Provided directly by universities through the RUR data collection platform.

  2. Bibliometric data – Reflecting research performance based on publications, citations, and related indicators, collected via The Lens platform.

  3. Online visibility – Measures how the university appears across the internet, using data from Google and social media accounts (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, X (Twitter), YouTube).

Each university is evaluated using the same 20 indicators and the four main areas of university activity applied in the RUR World Rankings: education (40%), research (40%), internationalization (10%), and financial sustainability (10%). This year, the ranking assessed over 1,000 universities.

This latest progress is a confirmation of the professional work of recent years and serves as further motivation for the university community to continue developing and enhancing international competitiveness.
