The University of Sopron and TAEG Educational Forestry Ltd. began a tree-planting program in 2021: each year, they plant as many saplings in the Forest of Loyalty as the number of new students. This autumn a record 1,538 first-year students enrolled — and 1,538 young trees were planted on November 11.
Students from the Forestry, Wood Industry & Creative Industries, Economics and Education faculties all took part. International students joined eagerly and were an important part of the day, helping plant and celebrating the tradition with local students.
Prof. Ferenc Lakatos welcomed everyone and recalled that the memorial forest started on the 100th anniversary of the 1921 referendum: planting a tree is a sign of trust in the future. The planting is run professionally by TAEG Educational Forestry Ltd.; this year’s species included pedunculate oak, black walnut, bird cherry and some lindens, chosen to suit the area.
For many students it’s a lasting moment — they can come back in years to see how the tree they planted has grown.
