unisopron-nice-vicerector2.webpThe University of Sopron’s commitment to sustainability has once again received international recognition. Prof. Dr. Ferenc Lakatos, Vice-Rector, gave a presentation at the 11th International UI GreenMetric Workshop in Nice, introducing the “Sound of Earth” thematic trail developed at the University of Sopron. The congress, held from June 17–20, 2025, by the Université Côte d'Azur in France, invited leading higher education institutions from around the world to share their experiences under the theme “Implementing Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education.”

Once again, it has been confirmed that the University of Sopron is not only keeping pace with global trends but is also at the forefront of environmentally conscious innovation and education.

As Hungary’s first carbon-positive university, the University of Sopron stands out with its outstanding sustainability performance, recognized by the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. This excellence is evident in its green infrastructure, educational programs, and research projects. The Vice-Rector’s presentation further enhanced the university’s international visibility and contributed to the exchange of the latest green strategies.

The project presented by the University of Sopron focused on a sustainability-themed trail located in the university’s 100-year-old, 17-hectare Botanical Garden. The university’s excellence and the success of its projects are demonstrated in areas such as:

  • Biodiversity protection

  • Sustainable water management (e.g., rainwater harvesting)

  • Energy efficiency

  • Climate protection and renewable energy (e.g., carbon-positive operations, biomass heating plants, solar panels)

  • Bike-friendly workplaces

  • A car-free botanical garden

  • Waste management and recycling (e.g., 3R program, composting, community garden)

  • Sustainability education across all age groups, including university teaching and research that promotes green innovation

The goals include the development of green infrastructure and shaping public awareness. The model focuses on net-zero climate neutrality, climate- and nature-positivity, and environmental awareness, organized into work packages aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. These initiatives are framed within the university’s “Living Lab Concept,” which integrates the model’s work packages and actions.

The trail presents sustainability topics in an interactive way. Visitors can scan QR codes at various stations to access detailed information, videos, and written explanations of the best practices on display. The trail plays a significant role in environmental education for both students and visitors, contributing to the expansion of their environmental awareness and knowledge.

The professional insights and new connections gained at the workshop will significantly support the advancement of the University of Sopron’s sustainability goals. The event once again affirmed that the university is among the international leaders in environmentally conscious operations. Through the acquired knowledge and new collaborations, the university can continue to strengthen its position in the UI GreenMetric international rankings, help build a sustainable future, and serve as a model for other institutions, proving that a livable, future-proof world requires the close cooperation of science and environmental awareness.
